TikTok Provides Users Control to Limit AI-Generated Videos in Their Feeds

The platform is rolling out a updated setting that allows them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their streams. This step comes as the platform revealed that it now features more than 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a widespread rollout. This shift comes amid a increase in AI content, spurred by recent AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Recent reports that nearly a tenth of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site only show content made by AI. A large amount of this material is deemed low-quality AI content, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is frequently illogical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that many people like content created using AI tools, from digital art to informative clips, and we want to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, according to their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

TikTok announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as artificially created. Collectively, more than 100 mn videos are submitted to the app every day, making AI-generated material a relatively small percentage of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be capable of limit or boost the level of AI content they watch by using the “manage topic” setting in the app and choosing “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the filter cover current affairs, style, cosmetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s policies require users to identify “realistic” artificially created content, and it bans dangerous fake videos of public figures or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be deleted under its community policies.

Furthermore, the service will now add an AI-generated label to content created with its built-in AI features, or detected by an cross-platform project for spotting content made by AI. This action is aimed to deter users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is furthermore establishing a $2m awareness program for experts and organizations to produce educational content about using AI responsibly. This program will assist educational bodies focused on training programming and robotics.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has supported its content review process, following controversy over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in the UK. It is planning to cut 439 jobs in its user protection division in its British office, with labor groups and digital protection specialists raising concerns that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead stated that people-led review would still have a role, but AI can protect employees by removing the most harmful content prior to it is viewed by people. The platform stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content reviewed by safety staff over the last 12 months due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we additionally believe it’s extremely critical to limit contact with harmful content as swiftly, which is why a extensive automated help is making a difference operate efficiently.”
