While Swimmers Ran From Danger, Viral Photo Depicts Rescuer Dashing ‘All Out’ Towards the Site.
Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her back yard. On a recent weekend evening, she, like many local residents, detected loud noises echoing across the neighbourhood.
“We all thought the same, but I thought it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. She left her home, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.
Positioned on the street, speaking to a duo who had run up the hill soaked, she heard someone coming up from behind. This turned out to be a lifeguard, running at full speed towards Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a medical device.
“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone running in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that large equipment and barefoot … He’s running at something that surely every instinct would tell you to go in the other direction.
“Absolutely no pause, but just completely full throttle running.”
A Powerful Moment of Bravery In the Wake of Chaos
The image taken by Ching of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many moments of valour in the following of the tragic event.
Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and ambulance crews treating dozens of those hurt.
Collective Response and Support
Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the violence becoming a temporary medical station. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, such as rushing into the water to rescue people needing help.
Following the attack, statements of gratitude flooded in. A social media message expressed appreciation for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “goodness will always conquer hatred”.
The squad of beach patrol later shared a message, saying they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.
“Thank you all for your supportive messages and support. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the team stated. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it supports those involved.”
Official Recognition
Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many permanent lifeguards, said that the team rose to the occasion from the moment the incident started right into late that nighttime.
“People have shared so many moving stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” commented a council representative.
“The team show altruism every day in keeping our iconic beaches protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that day should be highly praised.
“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the terror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much positivity we have seen in the presence of such hatred.”
